**** Previous editions of this acclaimed reference are cited in BCL3, Sheehy, and ARBA 1991. The fourth edition represents the most comprehensive and radical revision of the atlas since its original publication. Every major world event since the publication of the third edition in 1989 has been covered, with particular attention paid to the collapse of the Soviet Union and the emergence of new states across Eastern Europe. Thirty of the 600 maps have been replaced, while four entirely new facing-page map spreads include the Empire and Papacy in Europe 962-1250, Europe 1945-1973, Southeast Asia since 1945, and Europe since 1973. Additionally, all of the hand-drawn illustrations that appeared in the third edition have been replaced by photographs, and the original formal English has been modernized to make the volume more accessible to a general audience. 10.75x14.5" Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
