On both practical and scholarly grounds, the current international knowledge about higher education warrants a far-reaching, extensive integration. The Encyclopedia of Higher Education fully captures the plethora of perspectives and wide range of internationally derived descriptions and analyses offered in the current scholarship. The more than 300 articles and essays are grouped under major topics and within particularly salient and useful themes or categories. Volume 1 is given over entirely to country reports; it includes more than 135 analyses of national systems of higher education. Volumes 2 and 3 present analytical papers, over 120 in number, organized within five themes. Volume 4 is an innovative effort to bring to a general international audience analytical accounts of the changing nature of the basic disciplines that form the knowledge core of higher education. Comprehensive subject and author indexes are found in the latter part of this concluding volume. First-rate production values make the volumes a pleasure to handle as well as to read. For college, university, and larger public libraries. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
